Mother's Day 2009

You can give a gift, make her breakfast, but mothers surely deserve a bunch of fresh flowers on their special day. There are lots of flowers to choose from and even more ideas to make your own flower arrangements for a surprise decoration. We’ve summed up some interesting ideas to give you a head start.

Using Lilies

It doesn’t matter if you use single blooms or bouquets: both are loved and appreciated. It doesn’t have to be difficult too and you cannot go wrong with Lilies!

1.                   Use Lilies in nosegays with other colourful flowers to decorate the house.

2.                   You can place stargazer Lilies with some greenery in a glass vase before your mother wakes up. You can be sure she’ll love it!

3.                   Lilies are perfect to use in corsages or little hand-tied bouquets to use as a gift.

4.                   You can use different varieties and colours of Lilies to make an exotic flower bouquet.

5.                   As single Lily can give something special too: place one on the dinner table in a glass vase along with lit candles.

6.                   When your mother goes out on Mothers Day, you can place an abundant collection of Lily blossoms in glass vases by the window. She’ll be so surprised when she comes back!

Using Roses

Every woman loves Roses. Use white, red, pink, and use a whole bunch or even a single bloom to light up Mother’s Day.

7.                   People will always associate a single red Rose to Valentine’s Day, but don’t forget mothers love it too!

8.                   Roses are ideal for making beautiful Mother’s Day corsages.

9.                   You can make a nice warm bath with floating Rose petals. If you use both reds and whites and place some candles next to the bath it will look like a fairytale.

10.                You can also add Rose petals to a floating flower arrangement.

11.                If you’ve already got a nice gift, affix a rose on top of it with tape or a ribbon.

12.                Make monochromatic arrangements by pairing Roses of any one colour with other flowers of similar colour. Use pale white and cream colour Roses with Gerberas, Carnations etc. Add very little greens.

Using Carnations

There is an interesting legend associated with pink Carnations, which makes them more suitable for Mother’s Day flowers then any other flower. According to Christian legend, carnations first appeared on Earth as Jesus carried the Cross. The Virgin Mary shed tears at Jesus' plight, and pink Carnations sprang up from where her tears fell. Thus the pink Carnation became the symbol of a mother's undying love, and in 1907 was chosen by Ann Jarvis as the emblem of Mother's Day.

13.                Place pink Carnations mixed with soft pink roses and a few Ivy stems in a clear glass jug half filled with water.

14.                Make small flower arrangements by placing 2-4 Carnations in vintage cups and place them all over the house.

15.                Mix white Carnations with little pink blossoms from the garden and place in a china teapot.

16.                It’s really easy to make a bouquet containing Carnations (preferably white or pink), fresh spring blooms and soft coloured Roses.

Using Gerbera's

The Gerbera is a variety of the popular Daisy. You can create a memorable and lasting impression for 'Mom' by using Gerbera's abundantly in your Mother's Day celebrations.

17.                Floating arrangement always make a good impression. Place Gerbera blooms in a clear glass bowl filled with water. You can add some floating candles to make it perfect.
18.                You can keep some Gerbera’s on the breakfast tray when you present Mom with a 'Breakfast in Bed' in the morning.

19.                You can easily make the bathroom a lovelier place! Place a single Gerbera bloom to a glass jar and place in the bathroom to create a perfect 'spa' experience in the bathroom.

20.                Gerbera’s can beautifully be presented as a bouquet. Just make a bouquet with 7-8 Gerbera blooms (either a single colour or a mixed colour bouquet) and surprise your mother with it.

21.                Why just fresh up the house at one location, if you can fresh it up in any corner. Place one or two Gerbera flowers in vases or empty glass jars and place them all over the house.

22.                Gerbera’s are a certain added value to every flower arrangement. Mix Gerberas with greenery and yellow fillers and place in a vintage teapot or a china vase for a perfect Mother's Day Flower Arrangement.

Using pink

The most feminine colour is definitely pink. Pink flowers have always been a favourite with women and they are a sure shot way to pamper your mother on Mother's Day.

23.                Use a mixture of various pink blooms with green and/or white fillers.

24.                Use either soft coloured pinks or mix different pinks from the palest to the hottest pink.

25.                When gifting pink flowers, make sure the container is either white (like a china teapot) or clear glass.

26.                Use clear glass containers when using long-stemmed flowers like Gerberas, Tulips etc.

27.                Decorate a free-style arrangement by simply filling a large vase with abundant blossoms of a single flower such as Azaleas or Lilacs.
